The Problem

The green hydrogen market is arguably the next energy revolution, similar to the renewable energy revolution 20 years ago. The single biggest enabler and bottleneck in building the green hydrogen industry (and later other low carbon products) is the verification of hydrogen or other products as green, i.e. ensuring that the CO2 content is below a defined threshold for the entire value chain from the energy used to produce the hydrogen, the carriers used to transport the hydrogen, and any further processing or blending at the point of use. There is currently no solution for this.

The Solution

atmen’s IoT and SaaS platform solves this problem by enabling energy-intensive goods manufacturers to easily digitise, automate and audit-proof certification of CO2 emissions and other sustainability criteria along their entire value chain. By doing so, the company facilitates the production, transport, and use of green hydrogen and other low-carbon products such as green ammonia, green steel and green aviation fuel.

Why we invested

The green hydrogen economy is the next big thing. It needs certification to get started. However, certification is more difficult than for renewable electricity, because the hydrogen production process and supply chains are much more complex than electricity production. atmen offers a solution for this and has been driving the topic of certification for hydrogen at EU level for years.

atmen is led by founders Florian Kaiser and Pierre Boutin, who have not only successfully built companies in the past, but have also worked extensively in the energy sector, in particular advising the European Commission on the regulation of green hydrogen. They are therefore at the center of the developments in the green hydrogen sector. With the expansion of the team and the support of strong investors, we believe atmen is on its way to becoming the global standard for the digitalization of certification in the green hydrogen sector.
